"Thank You, M'am"
"Literature is at bottom a criticism of life" means that the most important thing about literature is that it judges life. I agree with this statement. In the short story-"Thank You, M'am" by Langston Hughes, the plot is used to criticize the lives of the character - Mrs. Jones and Roger.
The first thing that happened in the plot was that Roger, a boy snatched the purse from Mrs. Jones while she was walking on the street, but the woman was too large. The boy couldn't snatch the purse, and he fell down on the sidewalk. Mrs. Jones grabbed the boy by the front of his shirt. She brought the boy home, and taught him right from wrong, and let him wash his face and hands, and prepared a dinner for him. There was an opportunity for the boy to take the purse and run away, but he didn't . The reason he took the purse was to buy blue suede shoes. Finally, Mrs. Jones gave some money to him to buy the shoes he wanted. Roger said:" Thank you, M'am" and nothing more. They never saw each other again afterward. In my opinion, Roger's behavior was not consistent. He will become a good boy. So I think the boys sterling was criticize.
